Coffee sits at number three on the list of "top 10 widely consumed drinks in the world", but why?
As soon as I turned 14 I started drinking coffee and joined the other millions of daily coffee consumers around the world. At first I wasn't a fan but I soon acquired a taste for one of the most popular drinks. I became obsessed, and now I can't go a day without it. Sound similar to you?
Most of us know how coffee is made, but if you don't let me explain. Coffee beans are planted in the ground, starting off as coffee berries. They are then harvested, extracted from the ground and put through a rigging process of having the flavours extracted and roasted, to achieve maximum flavour. With so many different types of beans, flavours and strengths it's near to impossible to keep up.
Now more than ever people are leading increasingly busy lifestyles and need something to keep them going. We all know coffee is filled with caffeine and is the "juice that makes us all go!", but why has it become so popular within the last 5 years?
Coffee shops have become one of the most popular places to meet up with friends, grab a bite to eat and most importantly grab your fix of daily caffeine. Along with a rise in social media, people will snap a pic of their latte (with a cool artwork on top) against the aesthetically pleasing background of the cafe.
Coffee is everywhere! Even if you aren't a coffee lover it's hard to escape its reach and exposure. Think about how many 'coffee' shops there are within a 5-10km radius of most of us. I can think of at least 10 coffee shops within that distance and even more to choose from in my local shopping centre. Big franchise coffee shops such as Starbucks and Gloria Jeans are everywhere in Sydney's CBD offering consumers no shortage of options to get their caffeine fix.
"You can't make everyone happy, you aren't coffee"
People are also obsessed with personalisation! It's a massive trend that is going around right now and people are loving it. Consumers are able to personalise just about anything they want, coffee included. There are so many different styles of coffee - lattes, cappuccinos, long blacks, flat whites etc. Consumers are spoilt for choice. Starbucks release new coffee flavours aligned with the particular season, releasing festive drinks at Christmas and Halloween, along with seasonal drinks in the summer and winter. This appeals to many consumers, increasing their choices and providing them with alternatives. It keeps them coming back for more!
